Meet Indë, Multidisciplinary Artivist and Scholar

Indë contends with American imperial systems of division, using multimedia compositions to combat the lynching, disenfranchisement, and misrepresentation of queer people of color.

In the first episode of the Rooted Resilience Podcast, co-hosts M and Luc talk with Indë about the roots of their creative practices and methodologies, recent exhibitions, and how he sees his work evolving.

We invite you to explore video clips, artwork, and other bonus content below as you listen in to Episode 1: “It’s Always Revolution O’Clock.”

And don’t forget to join us TONIGHT at Bombyx Center for Arts & Equity for a Launch Celebration to remember! Get tickets now: $0-$100 sliding scale entry.

Mirror, Mirror “Who’s My Role Model?”

Mirror, Mirror “Who’s My Role Model?” is a touring exhibition that evolves with each new venue. Every installation involves large paintings of QTBIPoC, original music, and social/cultural programming.

“ …it's all about growing up in this area without people who looked and identified the way I do—namely, queer and trans Black people…and sort of painting those individuals and putting them on the wall to imagine the role models that I wish I'd had.”

Mirror, Mirror Debut Exhibition and Gallery Performance by Indë and Hazel Basil. 50 Arrow Gallery, Easthampton, MA

“In the venue, I performed the music alongside the paintings in order to express my experience in various layers, and also challenge people to reinterpret an image based on different lyrical narratives.”

“In my sweetest dreams
When I wake up and I'm lonely
I wish…
I wish you were my homie!”

Intersecting Mediums

On Indë’s Color Harmony System:

"…it looks sort of like a circus tent layout of colors. But I found that by combining those two scales [the chromatic musical scale and the color wheel] I was able to create a system for depicting musical harmony that felt playful and expressive in a way that Western sheet music could never.”

‘Snow White’ with Hazel Basil

“… music theory is really abstract and not really relevant to like a sense of social understanding. But I think in a similar way to people feeling freed by the color harmony system, for me, learning about jazz harmony it was just super exciting and made me feel like I could do so much more as a musician…”
